Culture Silhouette and poetry: Sense of Place

I created this image as a mockup to show willow plates and aerial perspective to my middle school. We discussed themes, outlines, as well as borders. The willow plate lesson was about trade between Asia and Europe. I used the porcelain willow plate as an example of Asian trade and for their art project. My students enjoyed transferring their outline drawings using tracing paper onto paper plates. The students explored monochromatic color with paint. The students learned that aerial perspective is different from one point perspective.

  1. The silhouette image is a mockup for the lesson on Asian Willow plates. I made several step by step examples of the Asian Willow plate design. The final step by step example of the Willow plate project is made in different shades of blue color pencil using silhouette. The lesson was presented to my middle school students as the Asian Willow plate design. My students were to choose a theme and symbols as well as a border design for their Asian willow plate design.

  2. The “Sense of Place” for me is based on my cultural background. I used an image from an artwork that I created based on my cultural heritage to make the example I used for the willow plate art project. I placed the image of the Willow plate silhouette on my blog http://tweatherby.blogspot.com/. The original culture silhouette image was placed onto a box and poetry accompanied the silhouette. The poetry used were little cultural quotes and my own poetry. The poetry is as follows: “we all traveled continents & oceans, “Over the glad waters of the deep blue sea, our thoughts are boundless and our souls are free”, Lord Byron; “walk a mile in my shoes”, American Indian proverb; “nani caught choo, nani budh doo”, Persian farci: “I don’t want to and I don’t feel like it.” I think my sense of place is defined by my cultural heritage. I feel a connection to my heritage and an openness to learning about and understanding other people’s cultures. I enjoyed the examples of the “Sense of Place” artwork, especially the ones that have to do with culture. I think basing art lessons on cultural designs are a good basis for art lessons.
